| Obverse description | Printed in intaglio and offset in blue and orange on a polychrome underprint, the obverse bears a vignette portrait of Pedro Álvares Cabral, the Portuguese navigator who claimed Brazil for Portugal on 22 April 1500, accompanied by a reproduction of the Terra Brasilis map — among the earliest cartographic representations of the newly discovered territory. To the left background, a facsimile section of the letter written by Pero Vaz de Caminha to King Manuel I of Portugal serves as a historical underprint, constituting the earliest known written document of Brazilian history. |
