The second family of Brazilian reais notes was introduced beginning in 2010 as a rolling replacement series, with security upgrades phased in across denominations rather than released simultaneously. The 10 reais in this family added an improved watermark and updated intaglio printing over the first family, though the changes were incremental rather than transformative — Brazil's chronic counterfeiting pressure at the lower denominations had already pushed the security spec reasonably high on the first issue.
Casa da Moeda do Brasil has printed all circulating Brazilian currency since the colonial period, making it one of the longest-continuously-operating government mints in the Americas.
