| Reverse description | A large, boldly rendered Swiss cross occupies the centre of the field, depicted with a double-outlined border giving it a raised, recessed appearance. The denomination '10 Cs.' is inscribed horizontally across the field, flanking the cross arms to the left and right respectively, while the date '1850' appears in large numerals in the lower exergual area. A beaded border encircles the entire design. |

The 1850 10 Rappen was part of Switzerland's first federal coinage series, issued following the creation of the federal state in 1848. Before unification, over eighty different cantonal monetary systems had operated in parallel — a commercial nightmare that the new constitution was explicitly designed to end. The Paris Mint struck the bulk of this inaugural federal issue under contract, as Swiss minting infrastructure was not yet capable of handling the volume.
The copper-clad silver construction was abandoned relatively quickly in favor of billon, making the 1850 type short-lived in its specific composition.
