The South African Reserve Bank issued this note to mark the centenary of Nelson Mandela's birth on 18 July 1918. It was part of a broader national commemoration that also produced a limited-edition coin series, and the 12,175,000 print run — modest by circulation standards — was largely absorbed by collectors rather than tills, meaning genuine wear examples are uncommon.
The hybrid substrate, combining paper with polymer layers, was introduced across the Mandela centenary series as a durability measure, a departure from the all-paper notes it nominally replaced. SABNC's Pretoria facility handled the full run domestically.
