P#120 spans an unusually long production window, and the signature sequence tells much of the story. The de Kock issues split into three distinct sub-types as the bank progressively upgraded security: first without a thread, then with a thread added to the same basic note design, then a shift to an alphanumerical suffix system that reflected broader rationalization of serial numbering across the SARB's portfolio during the mid-1980s.
The Stals-signed examples, issued from 1989, coincide with the period of acute international financial pressure on South Africa following the 1985 debt standstill — a time when domestic note production and distribution logistics were under considerable strain.
