| Beschrijving voorzijde | A naturalistic scene depicting a pack of African Painted Wolves (Lycaon pictus) traversing a shallow waterway, rendered in high relief against a finely frosted field. The animals are shown in various poses, some wading through water, their reflections subtly suggested in the polished surface below. A distant landscape with additional wildlife figures recedes toward the upper field. A repeating diagonal legend reading 'SOUTH AFRICA' appears multiple times across the upper background, serving as both inscription and decorative element. The engraver's initials 'MJS' appear in the lower left field. |

| Aanvullende informatie |
The Natura series, launched by the South African Mint in 1994, was conceived as a direct competitor to internationally recognized bullion programs, but with an explicitly conservation-oriented angle — each annual theme spotlights a species or ecosystem under genuine ecological pressure. The African Painted Wolf, also known as the Cape Hunting Dog or *Lycaon pictus*, is among the most endangered large carnivores on the continent, with viable packs restricted largely to the Kruger and Hwange ecosystems by the time this coin was struck.
Mintages for the Natura tenth-ounce denominations are tightly controlled and have historically run well below those of the Krugerrand fractions.
