Guatemala's 1926 gold coinage was struck at the Philadelphia Mint under contract, part of a broader monetary stabilization effort following the country's adoption of the quetzal as its national currency in 1925 — itself a consequence of chronic instability in the peso system and pressure from U.S. banking interests active in Central America at the time. The quetzal was pegged at parity with the U.S. dollar from the outset.
Mintage for this denomination was extremely limited, and the 10 quetzales saw virtually no circulation.
