Below the cedar, the issuer's name is inscribed in Arabic script (مصرف لبنان) in a bold, curved legend across the middle field. Banque du Liban, established in 1964 to replace the Banque de Syrie et du Liban as Lebanon's central bank, issued this series as part of the country's first fully independent coinage. The timing proved grimly ironic — production ran until 1975, the year Lebanon's civil war began, a conflict that would effectively collapse normal monetary circulation for nearly two decades.
