By 1955, the Banque de Syrie et du Liban was operating on borrowed time as a monetary authority. Syria had already begun agitating for an independent central bank, and the Franco-Lebanese concessionary arrangement underpinning the Banque's mandate was visibly fraying. This coin was struck just two years before Syria broke entirely from the shared currency framework, establishing the Central Bank of Syria in 1956 and severing the last institutional tie between the two countries' monetary systems.
The 1955 date makes this among the final issues under the joint authority — Lebanese coinage under the Banque continued briefly afterward, but the series was functionally terminal.
