This issue marks the second anniversary of Jaafar Nimeiry's coup of May 1969, which overthrew the civilian government of Ismail al-Azhari and installed a Revolutionary Command Council modeled loosely on Nasser's Egypt. Sudan had cycled through four governments in the three years prior. The commemorative series of which this coin is part was among the first acts of numismatic nation-building under the new regime — a deliberate signal of permanence from a government not yet two years old.
