This issue dates to the reign of Sultan Abdülaziz, who took the Ottoman throne in 1861 — the same year this coin was struck. Egypt at this point was an autonomous province under nominal Ottoman suzerainty, with its own mint at Misr producing issues bearing the Sultan's tughra alongside an accession year and regnal year. The 1861 date corresponds to regnal year 1, making this an accession-year piece.
Abdülaziz was the first Ottoman sultan to visit Western Europe, and his reign saw Egypt's Khedival ambitions accelerate under Ismail Pasha, who succeeded Said Pasha that same year.
