The United Arab Republic — the short-lived political union between Egypt and Syria proclaimed in February 1958 — was Nasser's most ambitious attempt to translate pan-Arab nationalism into a functioning state. This coin marks its first anniversary, struck at a moment when the project still seemed viable. Syria broke from the union just two years later, in September 1961, rendering the UAR a purely Egyptian entity in name until 1971.
