Additional information

Nāṣer al-Dīn Shāh's Golden Jubilee commemorative was struck to mark fifty years on the Qajar throne — the longest reign of any Qajar monarch and one he would not live to fully celebrate. He was assassinated on May 1, 1896, shot by Mirzā Reżā Kermāni at the Shah Abdol Azim shrine near Tehran, just four days before the jubilee festivities were scheduled to open. This 10 Qiran piece was therefore minted in anticipation of a celebration that became, almost immediately, a funeral.

Kermāni was a disciple of the pan-Islamic activist Jamal al-Din al-Afghani, whose extradition the Shah had demanded from the Ottomans months earlier.
