Albania's 1926 bronze coinage was struck in Rome under contract with the Italian state mint, a direct consequence of Ahmet Zogu's political realignment toward Mussolini's Italy following the 1925 Treaty of Tirana. The arrangement gave Italy substantial financial leverage over the newly declared Albanian republic — Zogu would formalize the relationship further two years later when he proclaimed himself King Zog I.

The Roman mint's involvement also explains the unusually clean striking quality seen across the 1926 series.
