Obverse description The obverse is printed in black intaglio on plain white stock, with the issuer's name split across the top and bottom borders reading "THE NATIONAL BANK" and "OF SCOTLAND". A central vignette depicts a dynamic allegorical group — a rampant lion, a seated female figure with a shield bearing the Scottish saltire, and a warrior figure with flags — atop a decorative plinth inscribed "EDINBURGH". Flanking the central vignette are three oval guilloche counters on each side bearing the word "TEN", with a promise text in copperplate script reading "The National Bank of Scotland Promise to pay on demand to George Crosbie or Bearer TEN POUNDS Sterling By order of the Board of Directors", with spaces for Account number and Manager signature at the foot.
