| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse, designed by David Lawrence, depicts a scene of First World War infantrymen marching across a war-ravaged landscape, rendered in detailed low relief against a frosted field. Five British soldiers in full kit, wearing Brodie helmets and carrying rifles with fixed bayonets, advance through a battlefield strewn with broken wire and debris, with billowing smoke clouds rising in the background. In the upper portion of the field, an excerpt from Rupert Brooke's poem 'The Soldier' is inscribed in a mixed serif and sans-serif typeface: 'There shall be / In that rich earth / a richer dust / concealed'. Along the lower arc of the coin, the inscription '1914 THE FIRST WORLD WAR 1918' is incused into the exergual area, flanking the date range of the conflict. |
