Beschrijving keerzijde A distinguished portrait of Sir Winston Churchill in three-quarter profile facing right, wearing his characteristic wartime military peaked cap and greatcoat, rendered in high relief with fine detail on the uniform and facial features. To the left of the portrait, his famous wartime speech excerpt is inscribed in a multi-line legend occupying the field. The denomination £10 appears within the reverse legend. The design by David Cornell captures Churchill's resolute and iconic wartime demeanor.

Aanvullende informatie

Issued to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Churchill's death, this is one of the largest commemorative coins Jersey has produced — a five-ounce gold piece struck in 22-carat gold. Jersey's connection to Churchill is particular: the island endured five years of German occupation from 1940 to 1945, and Churchill's decision not to defend the Channel Islands, made within days of France's fall, remains a source of complicated local memory. He judged them indefensible and demilitarized them without consultation.

The occupation lasted until May 9, 1945 — a date still celebrated on the island as Liberation Day.
