Jersey's commemorative gold program has produced some genuinely obscure issues, but this one marks something specific: the 50th anniversary of Concorde's first flight, which took place on 2 March 1969 when the prototype 001 lifted off from Toulouse under the command of André Turcat. The joint Anglo-French project had been formally agreed by treaty in 1962, and cancellation clauses were deliberately omitted — a political decision that locked both governments in regardless of cost overruns.
At 155 grams of 22-carat gold, this is a display piece, full stop. Jersey's status as a Crown dependency gives it issuing authority independent of the Royal Mint, which explains the volume of large-format commemoratives produced there.
