| Reverse description | Central gold-gilded depiction of the world's first adhesive postage stamp, the Penny Black of 1840, faithfully reproduced in high relief within a rectangular stamp frame adorned with latticed side ornaments and corner rosettes. The stamp vignette features the youthful left-facing portrait of Queen Victoria, diademed and with elaborately dressed hair, after the engraving by William Wyon RA, set against a ruthenium-blackened field to evoke the stamp's characteristic black ground. The inscription POSTAGE appears at the top of the stamp frame, ONE PENNY at the base flanked by plate letters A, and the face value 10 POUNDS is inscribed at the bottom of the coin field. The surrounding circular legend QUEEN VICTORIA · THE PENNY BLACK arcs around the upper periphery. |
