Introduced in September 2017, this was the Bank of England's second polymer note — following the Churchill fiver by almost exactly a year. De La Rue printed the series at their Gateshead facility, not London proper, though the firm's registered address remains in the capital. Polymer notes of this type are manufactured on a BOPP substrate supplied by Innovia Security, and the Bank confirmed early on that the tallow-derived additives in the original production run caused brief but genuine controversy among vegetarian and religious groups — a first for a UK banknote.
Jane Austen had never appeared on a Bank of England note before this issue. Her selection followed a public campaign to ensure women other than the Queen remained represented in the circulating series.
