| Reverse description | A heraldic Griffin — the legendary creature bearing the body and hindquarters of a lion combined with the head, wings, and foreclaws of an eagle — is depicted as the central device, with the date divided to either side. The Griffin stands over a shield bearing the arms of the House of Windsor, rendered in sharp relief on the double-thickness piedfort flan. The legend GRIFFIN OF EDWARD III arcs around the upper periphery, with the engraver's initials JC incorporated into the design. This is the fourth issue in the Queen's Beast series, honouring the heraldic beasts that flanked the Queen's coronation throne in 1953. |
