Alderney's position in the D-Day story is direct and brutal: the island had been under German occupation since 1940 and housed four forced-labor camps, including the only SS-run concentration camp on British soil, Lager Sylt. Liberation came in May 1945, nearly a year after the Normandy landings this coin commemorates — the Channel Islands were bypassed rather than liberated on June 6th, left to surrender only after Germany's general capitulation.
The 1994 issue marks the 50th anniversary. At 3.13 g of .999 gold, it shares its specification with the standard quarter-sovereign format popularized by the Royal Mint for commemorative issues of this period.
