St. Helena issued its own sterling-denominated notes independently of the Bank of England, a quirk of its status as a British Overseas Territory rather than a Crown Dependency. The island's tiny population — under 5,000 throughout this period — meant print runs were correspondingly small, and these notes rarely left the island in circulation.
De La Rue has printed St. Helena's currency since the modern series began, a practical choice given the island's remoteness and lack of any local printing infrastructure. The P#12 series ran for nearly a decade before being superseded following St. Helena's gradual integration of updated security specifications.
