Clydesdale Bank is one of three Scottish commercial banks still authorised to issue their own sterling banknotes — a privilege rooted in the Bank Notes (Scotland) Act 1845, which grandfathered existing Scottish note-issuing rights rather than abolishing them as the Bank Charter Act of the same year did for English provincial banks. The notes are legal currency but not legal tender anywhere in the UK, a distinction that continues to cause friction at English retail tills.
P#226F falls within a transitional window: Clydesdale had been majority-owned by National Australia Bank since 1987, yet continued issuing notes under its own name with Glasgow-printed production. Thorburn's signature tenure was brief, which tightens the date range on this type considerably.
