The St George and the Dragon design used on British coinage traces directly to Benedetto Pistrucci's original model, cut in 1817 for the Great Recoinage and never fully retired since. Pistrucci himself refused to surrender his original wax model to the Mint, meaning every subsequent use has derived from reproductions of his work rather than the master himself.
The 2024 five-ounce format continues a collector series that has leaned heavily on this pairing of a new effigy with the Mint's oldest continuously used reverse type — a deliberate tension between institutional continuity and the transition to a new reign.
