The piedfort format — double the standard planchet thickness — originated as a medieval French practice used to produce presentation strikes for assay verification and diplomatic gifts. The Royal Mint revived it as a collector format in 1982, and it has since become a reliable premium tier in their annual programs.
The Queen's Beast series concluded under Elizabeth II, but the Lion of England was retroactively reissued under Charles III as the series found renewed commercial footing. A 312-gram silver piedfort at this diameter is among the most physically imposing non-kilo issues the Mint produces.
