The East India Company connection to Saint Helena is not incidental — the island was administered exclusively by the EIC from 1659 until 1834, when the Crown assumed direct control following the Company's loss of its trade monopoly. Napoleon Bonaparte spent his final six years there under Company jurisdiction, a fact that still defines the island's historical identity more than anything else. Saint Helena remained one of the last territories where the EIC exercised genuine governmental authority, including taxation, defense, and judicial powers.

The 2023 licensing arrangement between the modern East India Company brand and the Saint Helena treasury revives a commercial name that was dissolved by act of Parliament in 1874.
