The king is depicted wearing a laureate helmet, cuirass and flowing drapery, with a sword at his side and the horse shown in a levade pose above a naturalistic ground. The composition is enclosed within a finely beaded inner circle, with the circumferential Latin legend CAROLVS·D:G·MAGN·BRITAN·FRAN·ET·HIBER·REX· running between the beaded border and the milled edge. Briot's mint mark is visible near the top of the inner legend. |
