| Reverse description | Equestrian portrait of King Charles I in full armour, seated on a prancing horse facing right and raising a baton in his right hand, closely adapted from the iconic design by Nicholas Briot used on the gold unite and silver pound of the seventeenth century. The king is depicted wearing a laureate helmet, cuirass and flowing drapery, with a sword at his side and the horse shown in a levade pose above a naturalistic ground. The composition is enclosed within a finely beaded inner circle, with the circumferential Latin legend CAROLVS·D:G·MAGN·BRITAN·FRAN·ET·HIBER·REX· running between the beaded border and the milled edge. Briot's mint mark is visible near the top of the inner legend. |
