10 Pounds British Linen Bank

The British Linen Bank — formally the British Linen Company, chartered in 1746 — was originally a textile trading enterprise that evolved into a full banking institution, retaining its anachronistic name long after any connection to the linen trade had dissolved. By the time this series was issued, the bank was operating primarily as a commercial lender serving the Scottish industrial economy during wartime.

Waterlow & Sons printed the bulk of Scottish private banknote production in this period, and their work for British Linen was competent but unremarkable by the firm's standards. The 1916–1920 date range covers the full span of the First World War and its immediate aftermath — a period when note issue and redemption patterns were significantly disrupted by wartime controls on gold convertibility.
