Issued to mark the beginning of the 15th Hijri century — which opened in 1400 AH, corresponding to November 1979 — this trial strike was produced as Sudan was navigating the early economic turbulence of Nimeiry's Islamization program, which would culminate in the formal adoption of sharia law in 1983. Trial pieces from the Bank of Sudan during this period were struck in limited numbers for approval and archive purposes, and relatively few entered collector channels through official routes.
