| Reverse description | The coin takes the three-dimensional form of a cube, with five faces beyond the obverse each bearing a distinct high-relief scene depicting episodes from the travels of Marco Polo. The image shown presents the scene titled SERVING EMPEROR KHAN, inscribed on a scroll-form cartouche at the top of the face; the deeply struck composition portrays Marco Polo and his companions being received at the court of Kublai Khan, with figures rendered in elaborate period costume set against architectural elements including a pagoda, columns, and a ceremonial parasol. The remaining four faces depict DEPARTING FROM VENICE 1271, STRUGGLES ON THE SEA, THE HOLY LAND, and SILK ROAD TO CHINA, each framed within a geometric border of Chinese lattice-work design. All five narrative faces are finished in antique silver with exceptional sculptural detail. |
