By 1900 the Staatsdrukkerij in Pretoria was operating under siege conditions — British forces were closing on the capital, and the Republican government was printing these notes knowing full well that withdrawal was imminent. The Gouvernements Noot series was a direct government obligation rather than a bank issue, bypassing the Nationale Bank entirely, which had already lost operational stability by this point in the war.
Most of the late-run printings were carried out of Pretoria as the government retreated eastward along the Delagoa Bay railway line in May 1900. Notes that survived the war years faced a hostile redemption environment — the British administration was under no obligation to honor ZAR government paper, and most were never redeemed.
