Issued as part of the FAO coin program, a United Nations initiative that ran through the 1970s and recruited developing nations to mint coins bearing agricultural themes in exchange for modest technical and financial support. Bangladesh was an obvious participant — the country had been independent for barely three years when this series began, and the 1974 famine killed somewhere between 27,000 and 1.5 million people depending on the source, a range that itself reflects how badly civil infrastructure had collapsed after the 1971 Liberation War.
