The "without border" designation distinguishes this note from the concurrent bordered variety of the same series — a printing variation that resulted from a plate or production adjustment at Thomas De La Rue's London works, not a design revision by the issuing authority. Both types circulated simultaneously, which is why the distinction matters to specialists but went unnoticed in ordinary commerce.

1972 sits in the middle of Marcos-era monetary consolidation, just before the proclamation of martial law in September of that year upended the republic's institutional arrangements entirely.
