Egypt abolished the monarchy in 1952, but it took six years for the currency to fully shed its royalist imagery. This issue — bearing the flag of the newly declared United Arab Republic — reflects the brief political union between Egypt and Syria that began in February 1958, which is precisely why the two-star flag appears here rather than the single-star design used in earlier republican notes.
Survey of Egypt, the state cartographic and printing authority, had produced Egyptian banknotes domestically since the early twentieth century. Two finance ministers signed across this series in sequence: Hassan Abbas Zaky from inception through October 1958, then Salah Eldin through mid-1960 — making signature attribution the primary tool for dating individual specimens within the P#177 run.
