La Banque Nationale was a Quebec-based chartered bank, not a central bank — the French name misleads at a glance. It operated out of Quebec City from 1859 until its 1924 absorption into the Banque Canadienne Nationale, meaning this 1922 note was issued just two years before the bank ceased to exist as an independent institution.
The dual Piastres/Dollars denomination wording reflects a bilingual Quebec market convention that persisted among Quebec chartered banks long after "piastre" had faded from English-Canadian usage. The British American Bank Note Company in Ottawa handled most of the major Canadian chartered bank series in this period, working from engraved steel plates with relatively standardized security approaches.
