Egypt's 10 Piastres note of 1916–17 was issued under British occupation, with the Egyptian Government nominally responsible but financial policy firmly directed by the British administration. Yusuf Wahba, whose signature appears on these notes as Minister of Finance, was a Coptic Christian politician who served in that role during a period of considerable political awkwardness — nominally serving a Khedival government that was itself nominally independent of a Britain then fighting a world war on multiple fronts simultaneously.
De La Rue produced the series in London during active wartime, which affected paper quality and supply schedules across their entire colonial contract portfolio in this period.
