Opmerkingen

South Sudan's independence on 9 July 2011 created an immediate practical problem: a new currency had to be ready at the moment of separation from Sudan. The South Sudanese Pound and its fractional piaster denominations were printed by De La Rue in anticipation of that date, making this among the few modern currencies in which the issuing state and its banknotes came into existence simultaneously rather than sequentially.

The piaster denominations saw negligible real-world use almost immediately — severe inflation eroded their purchasing power so quickly that coins and small notes effectively dropped out of circulation within the first years of the new republic.
