Max Roesler A.G. was a major German porcelain and ceramic manufacturer based in Rodach bei Coburg, and this zinc notgeld token was issued during the acute small-change shortage that gripped Germany in the early 1920s. Large industrial employers frequently issued their own emergency currency redeemable at company facilities, effectively subsidizing local circulation when municipal and state supplies fell short. Zinc was the material of necessity — copper and nickel had been swallowed by wartime requisitions and never fully returned to domestic coinage supply.
