Vereinigte Fränkische Schuhfabriken was one of several Bavarian shoe manufacturers that issued zinc factory tokens during the early Weimar period, when small-denomination coinage had effectively vanished from circulation. These pieces functioned as internal currency — redeemable at company stores or canteens — giving employers considerable control over how wages were spent. The Nuremberg shoe industry was heavily unionized by this point, and labor disputes over exactly such token-wage practices were a recurring flashpoint through the early 1920s.
