Issued by Leonhard Dobmann, a master butcher operating in Munich, this zinc notgeld token circulated as private emergency currency during the severe coin shortages that struck Germany in the First World War and immediate postwar years. Municipal and commercial issuers flooded the market with such pieces when the Reichsbank could not keep small denomination coinage in circulation — zinc was among the cheapest available substitutes.
