Additional information

Garbáty was a major Berlin cigarette manufacturer — Joseph Garbáty had built the business from a small operation in the 1890s into one of Germany's significant tobacco enterprises by the time the war created the coin shortage that prompted this token. With Kleinmünzen effectively disappearing from circulation after 1916, large employers across Germany issued their own canteen tokens to keep internal commerce functioning. This piece served the factory's on-site workers during the worst of the wartime metal and currency disruptions.
