Gewerkschaft Schallmauer was a coal mining cooperative operating in the Bachem district, and like hundreds of German mining operations during the late Wilhelmine and Weimar periods, it issued zinc notgeld tokens to compensate for chronic small-change shortages — first during the metal scarcity of World War I, then again during the monetary chaos that followed. These mine-issue pieces circulated almost exclusively within the colliery's own canteen and company store system, which is precisely why survivors tend to surface in unusually sharp condition.
