Issued by a lignite mining operation in the Brandenburg region during the acute coin shortages of 1917–18, this is Kriegsgeld in its most functional form — private industrial scrip filling the gap left when the Reichsbank could no longer supply enough small-denomination coinage to keep local wages paid and canteen transactions moving. The Heye works issued these tokens to circulate among their own labor force, redeemable within the company's sphere and essentially worthless beyond it.
Zinc was the only practical option by this point, with copper and nickel fully diverted to munitions production.
