Ebersberg's 1916 Pfennig notgeld belongs to the first wave of municipal emergency currency issued across Bavaria after the Reichsbank began restricting small coin as hoarding gutted circulation in the opening years of the war. Towns of Ebersberg's scale — a market municipality of a few thousand residents southeast of Munich — had no realistic alternative but to commission local or regional commercial printers for stopgap fractional notes.
Himmer in Augsburg was a natural choice, handling notgeld contracts for numerous Bavarian municipalities during this period. The 1916 dating places this firmly in the earliest phase of German notgeld production, before the flood of decorative issues that characterized 1921–22.
