Brehna was a small town in the Prussian Province of Saxony — population well under a thousand at the time — and its decision to issue Notgeld in 1921 was driven by the chronic small-change shortage that plagued German municipalities throughout the early Weimar period. Kunstanstalt H. F. Jutte of Leipzig was a prolific printer of municipal emergency currency during these years, handling commissions from dozens of similarly obscure Prussian towns.
The designer credit to H. Schiedel of nearby Bitterfeld is an unusually specific attribution for a note of this denomination — local artists were frequently engaged for Notgeld series, though their names rarely made it onto the printed face.
