Zörbig is a small town in the Bitterfeld district of Saxony-Anhalt, and this 1921 Notgeld issue reflects the chronic small-denomination coin shortage that plagued German municipal economies in the inflationary spiral following World War I. Local magistrates across the region were essentially forced into becoming amateur currency issuers — the Reichsbank provided no practical alternative for everyday transactions below the Mark level.
Kunstanstalt H. F. Jütte was a Leipzig commercial art printer responsible for a substantial volume of Saxony-area Notgeld, which partly explains why the design commission went to a Bitterfeld local rather than the printer's own house artists. Schiebel's involvement is unusually specific documentation for a piece at this denomination.
