| 正面描述 | The left panel carries the denomination numeral '10' within a decorative Art Nouveau cartouche at top, with the inscription 'PFENNIG / Gutschein des Restkreises / MERZIG-WADERN' in bold letterpress below. The right two-thirds of the note is occupied by a finely engraved vignette of the Dagstuhl Castle ruin as it appeared circa 1800, rendered in dark blue ink with detailed hatching; a caption in the upper right corner reads 'Ruine Dagstuhl um 1800.' A framed motto panel at the base of the vignette carries the inscription 'TURM UND REST, IM WETTER FEST!' |

Merzig-Wadern was one of the Saar districts placed under League of Nations administration following the Treaty of Versailles, leaving its local authorities in a jurisdictional grey zone — technically no longer fully German in governance, but not yet integrated into the Saar Territory's separate fiscal structure. The "Restkreis" designation marks this as a residual administrative unit, the portion of the original Kreis left outside the new boundaries, scrambling to maintain basic economic function with its own emergency small change.
Schaar & Dathe in Trier produced a large volume of Rhineland Notgeld during this period. The 1921 date places this squarely in the peak of Germany's small-denomination coinage shortage, before hyperinflation rendered such fractional values worthless within two years.
