Brehna was a small town in the Prussian province of Saxony, and like hundreds of similarly sized German municipalities in 1921, its magistrate resorted to issuing emergency paper fractional currency — Notgeld — to address the chronic shortage of small coin that had plagued circulation since the war years. The Reichsbank simply could not keep up with demand at the pfennig level.

H. Schiebel in nearby Bitterfeld handled a substantial volume of local Notgeld printing for municipalities across the region, which accounts for the competent but plainly functional character of this piece.
